Here's a mural I saw in Alkmaar, about 25 km from where I live. Alkmaar is a very nice and old city in the Netherlands.
I found this painting on a wall in Spaniardstreet. Spaniardstreet? Around 1600 the Netherlands were engaged in a war with the Spaniards, a war that lasted eighty years.
Because of the name of that street I understood this is Don Quixote. He is the main character in Cervantes' novel. Together with his down to earth partner Sancho Panza. This novel was first published in 1605.
Maybe I should finally read that book!!!

Great detail. He looks tired ... and disappointed. And who would not be. The only saying I know is that they fought "against windmills", now I understand... it stands for "never ending". And for most 80 years meant never ending. How sad. Thank you. Another lesson the school did not provide.

Alkmaar had an important role in the Netherlands' war for independence from Spain. The Siege of Alkmaar (1573) was a turning point in that war. So maybe there's more to that story than one would guess.
At the same time, the Spaniard Cervantes (author of Don Q) was in the Spanish Navy and was badly wounded in a naval battle against the Turks -- the Spanish had wars all over the place. Again -- more to that story than meets the eye.

Leuke mural. Ik heb het boek niet gelezen en of ik dat ooit ga doen?
Het is inderdaad een leuke vondst, hoewel Don Quixote weinig vandoen had met de 80-jarige oorlog.
Nee dat denk ik ook niet, Ferrara. Maar die Spanjaardstraat wel en daardoor bedacht ik dat het Don Quixote zou moeten zijn.
What a great mural. If only Panza had never revived Don Quixote after he attacked the windmill, Panza would not have suffered from Don Quixote's indiscretions. This is beautiful, dear.
Oh maar daar heb je volkomen gelijk aan. Het is 'm inderdaad. Ik bedoelde dat de tekening in combinatie met de Spanjaardstraat een leuke vondst is, hij staat er al een jaar of wat.
Don Quixote is mooi vertegenwoordigd in Alkmaar, ook al is het een mural. Hans
